The first time Youichi meets Ryousuke, the other boy is in the middle of a fight with three older Slytherins who've ganged up on him in a deserted corridor. For Youichi's part- well, the staircases decided to move and take him along for the ride. He's only been at Hogwarts two weeks, so he's kind of lost.

And two years younger than the bullies ganging up on who he thinks is a small Hufflepuff boy. But Youichi only stops to toss his bag into an out of the way corner before he throws himself into the fray, teeth bared and fists flying.

Even though one of them hits him with a jinx that makes him retch, dizzy, he doesn't stop until the last of them turns tail and runs, biting swear words out from between bloodied lips.

A hard voice pipes up. "I didn't need your help."

Youichi, wiping his mouth, just shrugs. "I figured I'd give it anyway. Sorry."

The Hufflepuff boy pushes himself off the wall with dignity, despite the purple-blue of a bruise forming on the curve of his cheekbone. He dusts himself off with a huff, pocketing his wand. Youichi recalls that he'd made good use of it, once the bullies had been distracted. "Well, you're a Gryffindor. I suppose I shouldn't expect any less. Don't you know how to use your wand? You suck."

Youichi thinks that he did pretty well for himself, despite sucking. And anyway, "I haven't learned that many spells yet."

"Hmm, Muggleborn? I guess that makes sense. You should learn some spells before those boys come after you next. You won't have the advantage of surprise, then."

"Sure," Youichi agrees easily. Then, he scrubs his hand down the front of his robes and offers it along with a wide, bright grin. "I'm Kuramochi Youichi. First year. Nice to meet you."

After a second, the boy's lips quirk into something that's nearly a smile. He takes Youichi's hand.

"Kominato Ryousuke."

---

"Ryou-san!" The other boy turns at the sound of his name, and his friends turn with him. Youichi doesn't care, waving jauntily at them all from the cluster of Second Years waiting to file into the Transfiguration Classroom, his grin a bright slash in his face.

Ryousuke doesn't grin back, but his lips do twitch a little, and he excuses himself from his friends to come over. Youichi squeezes out between Zono and Miyuki, an odd little bubble of gladness expanding in his chest.

"Have you grown taller over the Summer?" Ryousuke asks, the first thing he's had a chance to say to Youichi since a passing hello in the Great Hall a few days ago. His voice is faintly accusing, and Youichi pulls himself up his two extra inches with pride.

"Sure have!" he crows. "I'm taller than you now, Ryou-san."

He ducks a moment later, yelping, as Ryousuke smacks him over the head with his Transfiguration textbook. "Taller or not," Ryousuke says, very dry. "I can still reach your head to hit you."

Youichi whines a little bit more, but then switches tack. "I tried out for the Quidditch team!"

"Oh?"

The news has been bursting out of him for days. Hufflepuff had their tryouts earlier than Gryffindor did, so he already knows that Ryousuke is Hufflepuff's newest Chaser. "I'll be playing against you, Ryou-san! I'm a Chaser too."

Ryousuke huffs. "Well," he drawls. "Hopefully you'll suck less at Quidditch than you do at Charms."

Professor Takashima opens the door before Youichi can respond, so they quickly make their goodbyes since Ryousuke also has to move on to his next class. But Youichi hangs back as his yearmates file into the classroom, unable to really explain why, as he watches Ryousuke's flash of pink hair disappear around the corner.

---

Youichi dyes his hair over the summer before Fourth year. When Ryousuke, craning his head over the rest of the student body, catches sight of him, an absolutely devilish smile spreads over his face. Youichi, watching him, feels himself flush from his neck to the roots of his hair.

And, in a flash of clarity, he understands why his heart is doing somersaults in his chest.

"Hufflepuff colours?" Ryousuke teases, as he plops down into the empty space next to Youichi at the Gryffindor table. "I'm flattered."

Youichi, shaken by his new realisation and not sure what to do with it, isn't really ready to interact with Ryousuke just yet. He needs time that he doesn't have, heart thundering in his rib cage. Fortunately for him, Ryousuke has turned away to inspect the food that's just appeared on the wide golden serving plates- and Youichi has time to scrape together a breath. "I uh... just felt like a change, I guess?"

"If you just felt like a change, you could have waited until we came back and charmed your hair a different colour. I know you learned that one, we did it in Third year. You used a Muggle dye."

Youichi, oddly, prickles a bit at that. "So?" he says sharply. "I'm a Muggleborn, what's wrong with it?"

Ryousuke, in the midst of raising a fork, puts it down again. When he turns to stare, Youichi feels himself flush even harder, and wishes he could will the humiliated colour out of his cheeks. He stares at his plate instead.

"I never said there was anything wrong with it." Ryousuke's voice is careful, his smile suddenly nowhere to be found. Youichi wants to crawl beneath the table. "Just that it takes a lot more dedication than a Colour-Changing Charm, that's all."

Of course. Youichi knew Ryousuke hadn't meant it like it sounded, but he feels off-balance in a way he's never been before, thrown by the realisation that he has a crush on the older boy. The silence stretches, awkward, and then Youichi sighs.

"Sorry. It's just... been a bit of a weird summer." Not as weird as he makes it sound, but Youichi would rather have the white lie on his conscience than address the pink elephant in the room.

Ryousuke looks at him a moment longer, brow furrowed, before he huffs. As he turns back to his plate, he says casually, "Well, it suits you. Though next year, you should come visit me. I'll invite Tanba and Masuko, and Chris lives nearby. With Haruichi, we could make up a three-on-three for Quidditch."

And it's obvious that Ryousuke is changing the subject- Quidditch is something they both love, and it's an easy topic to discuss. But Youichi is immeasurably, unutterably grateful.

"Sounds awesome!" he exclaims, and he doesn't even have to fake the enthusiasm. He never gets to play Quidditch during the summer. "Oh, hey, did you catch the World Cup coverage this year?"

"Of course. What did you think of the Bulgarian seeker?"

---

And it continues like that for years.

Years and years.

Sometimes, Youichi thinks about it- about saying something, anything. But every time Ryousuke abandons the Hufflepuff table to sit next to him, his yellow tie stark against a sea of red and gold, it makes something expand in Youichi's chest- something a little like joy, like pride.

Ryousuke is his friend, and Youichi is fairly Ryousuke doesn't like him like that. So, even though sometimes the thought leaves his stomach twisted in bitter knots, Youichi grins and laughs and bears it, because he can't face the thought of not having Ryousuke in his life at all.

But all good things must come to an end. Gryffindor wins the House Cup in Youichi's Sixth year, and beyond the screaming, sweaty cluster of his cheering teammates he can see the drooping Hufflepuff team, drifting slowly to the ground.

Ryousuke stays in the air the longest, face turned up to the grey sky overhead.

And Youichi abruptly realises that he will never see Ryousuke draped in Hufflepuff quidditch colours ever again.

---

Youichi finds him in the kitchens, two hours before the End of Year feast.

They've studied in here plenty- Youichi is sure he's one of the few Gryffindors to get the pleasure, since Ryousuke's told him the kitchens are a closely guarded secret. He's seen the Slytherin Head Boy, Chris, in here too, with Tanba, and Ravenclaw's Zaizen, but that's pretty much it.

If Youichi's honest with himself, he likes the fact that Ryousuke trusted him with this, but he doesn't look too closely at that feeling- is used to glimpsing it out of the corner of his eye by now.

"I had a feeling you'd drop by." At the voice, Youichi turns, and feels his mouth curve into a smile.

Ryousuke is curled in an armchair by the great, blazing hearth, seemingly oblivious to the heat that Youichi can feel seeping under his collar from thirty feet away. He's cradling a giant mug, and there's a platter of shortbread biscuits sitting at his elbow, already half-eaten.

"Yeah, I figured you'd be here," Youichi says, and tucks his hands into his pockets before slouching over. Rather than take the other armchair which pops obligingly into being, he lowers himself to the floor with a grunt and leans back against Ryousuke's knees, sighing.

Ryousuke doesn't comment, like Youichi half-expects. Instead, he just hums and shifts so that Youichi has enough space, and then lapses back into silence. The kitchens are bustling with preparations for the feast, but one of them scurries over to press a goblet of pumpkin juice into Youichi's hands that he cradles gratefully.

With other people, he'd probably try to fill the silence. But six years of friendship have told him that Ryousuke's got something on his mind, and he'll say something when he's ready.

So Youichi just leans back, head tilted against the arm of the chair, and shuts his eyes to wait.

At some point, the heat and the sweetness of the juice begin to weigh on his eyelids, and he dozes off.

When he wakes again, it's to fingers gently running themselves through his hair, scratching lightly at his scalp. Muzzy with sleep, he doesn't think anything of leaning into the touch, humming pleasurably- and his head drops awkwardly when the fingers disappear completely.

"Ryou-san?" he asks groggily, blinking the sleep away as he turns to stare at his friend. "Was that you?"

"Ah." He's never seen that look on Ryousuke's face before- open and startled, eyebrows high. There's a faint flush along the edge of the older boy's cheekbones as he curls his hand tightly back against his chest. "Well- yes. Sorry. You looked… comfortable."

And Youichi may nit have the best grades in his year, but he's good at people. He's good at Ryousuke in particular. And if his eyes aren't playing tricks on him, he would recognise this look on any other face.

Youichi's chest has contracted into a ball, so much that he can barely breathe. Biting his cheek, he shifts onto his knees and turns so he can place both hands along the arms of the chair. He brackets Ryousuke's knees, fingers curled tight into the palms of his hands so he doesn't accidentally brush them against the other boy's hands and he stares, heart in his throat.

Last chance.

"Ryou-san," he says, and his voice fails him. Some Gryffindor he is.

But Ryousuke interrupts his struggle by reaching out to hesitantly brush his fingers against Youichi's cheek.

"Yes?" he replies.

Youichi makes a sound deep in his throat and gasps, desperate, "Can I-"

And Ryousuke cuts him off- "Yes," and reels him in for a kiss.

---

Two years later, Youichi finishes un-shrinking the last of his boxes in the middle of his new bedroom, and waves his wand. Clothes float out of the boxes, settling themselves in the drawers and the large wardrobe on one side of the room.

"Your Charms work doesn't suck as much nowadays."

"Oh come on, Ryou-san," Youichi complains, turning to grin at the other man standing in the doorway. "I was eleven!"

Ryousuke comes over, flicking a finger lightly against Youichi's forehead. "Still the same stupid Gryffindor."

Youichi grins. "Your stupid Gryffindor."

"Of course," Ryousuke says, and leans in for a kiss.

There are so many things to love about this? Kuramochi straightening up to say he's grown and getting smacked for it, being automatically on the defensive about being a muggleborn and the careful way Ryousuke deals with it, bleaching his hair while trying to fend off the Realisation he has a crush, that mental picture of all the Hufflepuff team descending toward the ground after their loss... THANK YOU FOR HUFFLEPUFF RYOUSUKE BTW

It's kind of adorable that they met each other much younger than in canon, and the kind of friendship and camaraderie they have early on ;;;;

FOX !!!! I love your writing. Yesterday I was just telling Mel I'm still never over that ChrisZaizen you wrote for SASO and I'd trust that any kuraryou you created would be a treat. I WASN'T WRONG!! Hope you had a great day, and best wishes for the new year <3

THIS WAS AMAZING!!!! I don’t really do Harry Potter so House sortings and such don’t really matter to me, but krry meeting at 11 made my heart SO FULL. Then growing up and falling in love together was so good that I was on the edge of my seat!!! The parallels between quidditch and baseball were so smart, too!!! I really loved this a lot!! also I’m always weak for ryousukes telling Kuramochi he sucks... May this trope never die
