Kazuya feels the new kid watching him as he lights his cigarette, and inhales. "It's a shitty habit," he comments. The kid nods, but remains silent. He takes another, smaller, breath, and offers the end to the kid, one eyebrow raised.

The kid takes it without hesitation, and inhales just as deeply as Kazuya did. Kazuya's other eyebrow joins the first. "They let you pick up that kind of habit in prison?"

Kazuya thinks for a moment that he's not going to reply. The kid has barely said a word since they pulled him out of the lockup and gave him a job, but apparently smoking makes for good bonding.

"Having something to do was nice," he says.

Kazuya nods, and holds out his hand for the kid to return the last of the stick. The kid averts his gaze, and pretends he doesn't see, so Kazuya laughs and drops it.

"Guess we have something in common," he says.

'The kid' is Furuya Satoru. Kazuya had offered his hand to him two weeks ago and pulled him out of the detention facility to work on Kazuya's latest case which was in desperate need of more manpower. He was quiet enough that Kazuya wasn't sure for a while that the kid wasn't mute, but after he'd pulled his dominator on their target and squeezed the trigger without hesitation, he'd been forced to explain himself. The way he had, well, it had made Kazuya's heart squeeze.

"If I don't work, I have to go back," he'd said.

Kazuya had laughed and slung his arm around the kid's shoulder. "Guess we don't have to worry about you not pulling your weight."

The kid's lack of hesitation to follow orders is what turned him into a latent criminal, at least, from what Kazuya has deduced. His record says that he was put in an institution at age nine, after his baseball team had decided to call him a monster. Kazuya sees it all the time — people becoming what others think they are. Still, Kazuya thinks it's a waste. The kid is frightening, sure, but he makes a hell of an enforcer. He has quick reflexes and dedication. Shitty stamina, but you can't have everything, and Kazuya has been working on that with him, dragging him around the gym until he plants his heels and refuses to continue. Kazuya wonders how someone who gets punished with isolation and drugs if he doesn't comply has ended up so stubborn.

Kuramochi finds them on the roof, and shakes his head at the cigarette between the kid's fingers. "Don't end up like him," Kuramochi says.

The kid nods, and Kazuya splutters. "Who's the enforcer here?"

Kuramochi laughs back. "I'd rather be a latent criminal than someone who is so twisted even Sibil doesn't know what to do with them."

Kazuya claps his hands over Furuya's ears. "You're going to give my beloved partner the wrong idea!"

Kuramochi cackles. "Like I have to! You do that just fine on your own." He jerks his head back at the stairs. "We've got a meeting."

Kazuya nods and waves him off. "We'll be there."

Once Kuramochi has left, Kazuya realises that Furuya hasn't looked away from him for a while.

"Have I got something on my face?" he asks.

Furuya shakes his head. Kazuya waits, in case there's something he wants to say. It takes a while — enough time that Kazuya wonders whether he read the kid wrong — but eventually he says: "Miyuki-senpai… you shouldn't care about me."

Kazuya softens, and reaches up to ruffle his hair — he always forgets how tall the kid is. "I'll be fine. Don't worry about me. Besides, there's plenty worse than being a latent criminal."

GAWDDD, this is absolutely PERFECT. I'm a total sucker for Psycho Pass AUs and Furumiyu is just the RIGHT kind of ship for this AU.

I loved how you kept Furuya's backstory as close to canon as possible and instead of creating an overly dramatic backstory to justify being a latent criminal, it was his ability to follow orders that clouded his psycho pass. It's believable and something I can see Furuya doing honestly.

Also, I'm weak for subtlety so I really enjoyed the chemistry between Furumiyu. (Especially the hair ruffle at the end!)

If I had to pick one line from this, my favorite would be:

"If I don't work, I have to go back," he'd said.

Also:

"I'd rather be a latent criminal than someone who is so twisted even Sibil doesn't know what to do with them"

I'm not whether this was hinting on Miyuki being criminally asymptomatic (although I'm not sure asymptomatic individuals can become inspectors so I assumed Kuramochi was joking about Miyuki's personality?? IDK it's been so long since I rewatched Psycho Pass) but either way, I enjoyed this line! (Especially considering that Sakupyon voiced both Miyuki and Makishima)

Anyway, I really enjoyed this beautiful furumiyu AU! Thank you so much for the gift, Icie! I hope you have a wonderful holiday!
